Introducing Yazmeen Kanji

We're excited to share that Yazmeen Kanji will be joining us as an instructor for the upcoming Short Film Lab at the Muslim Media Hub. Yazmeen is a dedicated Muslim Indo-Caribbean filmmaker who has built a reputation for her impactful documentary work and her commitment to authentic storytelling. As the CEO of Films With A Cause and a Hot Docs Accelerator Fellow, she focuses on helping filmmakers tell their stories in a genuine and compelling way.

Yazmeen's first documentary, "From Syria To Hope," received the Best Short Documentary award at the 2019 Toronto Short Film Festival, showcasing her ability to capture and convey powerful stories. Her follow-up documentary, "With Love From Munera," was warmly received by audiences, winning the audience choice award at the 2021 Breakthroughs Film Festival and being selected for the TIFF Next Wave 2021. Additionally, it was featured on the digital TIFF Bell Lightbox site.

Currently, Yazmeen is working on her first documentary for broadcast, which is partially funded by the Hot Docs CrossCurrents Fund. This project looks at systemic racism in healthcare through a personal story about Sickle Cell Disease, highlighting Yazmeen's dedication to exploring significant social issues through film. She is also in post-production on a short film about an Indo-Caribbean teenager, emphasizing the importance of self-confidence and inner strength.

Yazmeen's commitment to telling stories that resonate and make a positive impact aligns perfectly with her role in teaching the distribution process in our Short Film Lab. Participants will benefit from her experience and insight into sharing their stories with a wider audience, learning firsthand from someone deeply invested in the power and potential of film.
